You can extend an environment based on the terms of its assigned environment policy.
Extending a Policy
In CloudShare, a policy specifies how long an environment will run, when it will be deleted, and how long after inactivity it will be suspended.
If you need more policy time for your environment, you can extend the environment. This capability enables you to easily manage resource consumption. You can extend your environment for a length of runtime and storage time that is less than or equal to the length of the policy associated with your environment or experience.
- Click the Infrastructure button.
- Click the Environments List tab from the left menu and select the relevant environment. Note that the environment must be active. The following displays:
The following options are provided at the top of the Environment Details page.
Deletes on
Specifies the date until which the environment will run and then be deleted.
Extend – Extending the Environment’s Policy
The Extend option enables you to increase the environment’s runtime and storage duration based on your configured settings, up to the limits defined by the policy associated with the environment or experience. The following is displayed:
Extend the participant’s environment’s lease in the following fields:
- Storage Lease: Specifies the total time that the environment will remain available before it is automatically deleted. This value equals the environment's total life cycle and must be longer than the Runtime Lease described below.
- Runtime Lease: Specifies the total time that the environment will remain in the Running state, with all the machines accessible. Afterward, the environment is automatically suspended. This value must be less than or equal to the Runtime Lease of this environment’s policy.
Note: By default, the Runtime Lease and Storage Lease fields are populated with the runtime and storage values from the selected policy.
Note for Instructors: When extending environments beyond the session’s end time, also extend the session’s time to ensure participants can access their environments.
Click the Extend Environment button. The extension is implemented immediately.
Note: An environment can be extended as many times as needed.
Suspends in
Specifies the remaining inactivity time before the environment is suspended. Suspending an environment helps conserve resources and prevent unnecessary runtime usage when it is not actively in use, while keeping it available for later use.
Extend Suspend
Extends the inactivity period after which the environment is automatically suspended to the maximum.
Policy Details
To display the policy’s details, click . The following is displayed:
- Runtime Lease: Specifies the number of days that the environment can run before it is automatically suspended.
- Storage Lease: Specifies the number of days that the environment is stored before it is automatically deleted.
- Suspension Time Before Deletion: Specifies the amount of time the environment can remain suspended before it is automatically deleted.
To modify the policy, see CloudShare Policies.
Changing a Policy
A policy is a set of rules that define the behavior and management of environments, including resource allocation and access permissions. Policies help you control various aspects of environment management. Changing a policy enables assigning a different environment policy to the environment.
To effectively change one or more policy values for an existing environment:
- Create a new policy with the desired values.
- Use the Change Policy option in the Environment Details page to assign the newly-created policy to that environment. Start by clicking the the Infrastructure button.
- Click the Environments List tab from the left menu and select the relevant environment.
- Click the ellipsis
menu icon on the right of the Environment Details page and select the Change Policy option, as shown below:
The following is displayed:
The policy change takes effect immediately after clicking the Change Policy button.
A project manager can edit an existing policy, with the following limitations:
- The policy cannot currently be assigned to an active environment.
- If the policy is assigned to an environment, you can only change the value of the Inactivity Handling field. If the assigned environment is currently running, this change will be applied so that it will only extend the current inactivity time (meaning not shorten it). Any new environment or new instance will reflect the new Inactivity Handling time value specified in the change.
A Project Manager can edit an existing policy; however, the policy cannot currently be assigned to an active environment.
If the policy is assigned to an environment, you can only change the value of the Inactivity Handling field. If the assigned environment is currently running, this change will be applied so that it will only extend the current inactivity time (i.e., not shorten it). Any new environment or new instance will reflect the new Inactivity Handling time value specified in the change.
Another way to change a policy is described in Editing a Policy.
